Legislative Framework in the EU

One of the strategic aims of the European Union (EU) is to reduce member states’ dependence on crude oil imports by introducing renewable automotive fuels. EU directives demand that renewable fuels will account for a minimum share of future markets and that this figure is set to increase in terms of total fuel requirements:

  • by 2005 => 2.00 %
  • by the end of 2010 => 5.75 %.

The EU’s political will is laid down in appropriate legislation. Exempting renewable automotive fuels from fuel taxes over the next few years is one effective way of promoting its entry on to the market. This also allows CHOREN to invest in production capacity in order to make fuels of this kind available to the general public.
