CHOREN’s advanced biomass gasification technology for Malaysia

Freiberg, 4th January 2010 – Recently, the CHOREN group provided an
exclusive project development opportunity to Business Resources Ltd., Kuala
Lumpur that is invested in a cooperation in the field of biomass gasification
technology as well as in cultivation of energy crops in Malaysia.

The partners agreed to perform a feasibility study for the states of Pahang, Johor and Malacca in Malaysia for a synthetic gas production plant including technical concept, site evaluation and economic analysis for the first Biomass to Liquid (BTL) Diesel project with integrated Carbo-V technology in South East Asia.

As a first step, the construction of a power unit is envisaged. By operating the power
plant the local project development partners wish to gain valuable experiences with
regards to the practical, operational and financial aspects of biomass gasification
technology based plants. The mutual strategic intent is to transform the plant into a
completely operational BTL plant based on two gasification trains at a later stage.

Due to its privileged climate, Malaysia as well as most of South East Asia offers
excellent opportunities for 2nd generation biofuel production using agricultural residues such as palm kernel shells, miscanthus and other forest residues. “We agreed on the usage of feedstock which is in line with international sustainability standards,” said CHOREN’s CTO, Olaf Schulze. ”We will not be using raw materials that have a negative impact on the climate and the environment.”

"The firm resolve of the Government of Malaysia, to turn Malaysia into the "Green Energy Hub" for the region, and the Government of Germany’s resolve to increase renewable fuels globally, shall both be of great assistance and provide economic and financial viability for our projects", was underlined by Sinku Zaman, Chairman, Business Resources Ltd.

Background
CHOREN is an internationally leading supplier of technologies for synthesis gas production from carbon-containing solids. A high-purity, high-energy synthesis gas is produced by gasification; once it has been treated in the appropriate manner, this can be used for the generation of electricity and for the production of BTL as well as traditional synthesis gas products (e. g. ammonia and methane).
Currently, the CHOREN group with subsidiaries in USA and China employs about 300 people. The controlling interest in CHOREN is held by a number of private investors. Furthermore Daimler Aktiengesellschaft and Volkswagen Kraftwerk GmbH are minority shareholders of CHOREN.

The Carbo-V process developed by CHOREN is a 3-stage gasification process:
During the first stage of the process, the biomass is continually carbonized through partial oxidation (low temperature pyrolysis) using air or oxygen at temperatures between 400 and 500 °C, i.e. it is broken down into a gas containing tar (volatile constituents) and solid carbon (char).
During the second stage of the process, the gas containing tar is post-oxidised using air and/or oxygen in a combustion chamber operating above the melting point of the fuel’s ash. During the third stage of the process, the char is ground down into pulverised fuel and blown into the hot gasification medium. The pulverised fuel and the gasification medium react endothermically in the gasification reactor and are converted into a raw synthesis gas.

Business Resources Ltd. (BRL), is family owned Malaysian based Company, with shareholding interests in Real Estate, Energy and Power Projects in South Asia and South East Asia as well as in Expander Energy Inc., Alberta, Canada, which holds a license for a CHOREN-technology based project in Canada.
